Hills Grammar is delighted to welcome the Hills community to their Parent Learning Lounge Program in 2020. The free Program includes a range of excellent guest speakers, presenting on topics that are important to the learning and wellbeing of children and young people, parents and teachers in our area.
The first session on Tuesday 25 February at 6.30pm will feature Dr Kristy Goodwin, who will discuss the difficulties in ‘Raising Your Child in A Digital World’. The session is aimed at parents of 5 – 12 year olds and how to make informed decisions about how to best manage screen-time at home (so that it doesn’t always end in ‘scream time’), without banning the iPad, or unplugging the TV!
About Dr Kristy Goodwin
Dr Kristy Goodwin is one of Australia’s leading digital wellness and parenting educators (and mum who also deals with her kids’ techno-tantrums!). She is the author of Raising Your Child in a Digital World, a speaker and digital wellness researcher, who doesn’t suggest that we ban the iPhone. Kristy worked as a primary school and early childhood educator for fourteen years before becoming an academic. She has worked with clients including Apple, Nickelodeon Channel, the National Broadband Network, McDonalds, NSW Department of Education and Optus. She has spoken at national and international conferences and at childcare centres, schools and at medical conferences throughout Australia. Kristy is regularly called upon by the media to translate the latest research about kids and screens into practical and relevant information for worried parents and professionals.
What you’ll hear about
Parents will understand the latest risks to children’s online safety (including current cyber-safety threats, pornography exposure, introduction of phones and social media), as well as the health, learning and development implications of young children (5-12 years) growing up in a world of screens. Kristy will share her simple formula to determine healthy screen-time limits and will arm parents with a host of strategies and ideas to help kids develop healthy technology habits. Dr Kristy will explain how technology is impacting children’s learning, sleep, social, language, play, physical skills and their vision, hearing and posture and will arm parents with practical strategies about how to best raise kids in a digital world. Parents will learn how to get the most out of their child’s screen-time so they can finally put a rest to the guilt and guesswork.
