Canberra’s sunny winter days, with blue skies and crisp air, are perfect for enjoying fun outdoor activities – just bring your jacket and scarf! On cooler days, there’s plenty of indoor attractions and activities to keep people of all ages busy. And Crowne Plaza Canberra’s Family Getaway package has your accommodation sorted!
Here are Crowne Plaza Canberra’s top suggestions for winter family fun in the nation’s capital.
Have fun in the snow
A great first snow experience only around 45 minutes from Canberra city, there’s snow play, beginners ski and snowboard lessons, tobogganing and more. Sessions have limited numbers, so prior online bookings are recommended. As activities at Corin Forest are weather dependent, it’s best to check the conditions before you go.
Try out your skating skills
In the city centre, only a short walk from the hotel, the Skating At Festival returns from 29 June to 22 July 2018. You’ll find a pop-up skating rink and other wintery activities including an ice slide, as well as a Ferris wheel, jumping castle and more. Ice skating and carnival rides tickets can be purchased online.
Be creative with art and craft
During the school holidays, many of Canberra’s attractions and national institutions offer family activities or why not try out the new Headhunt! app at the National Portrait Gallery. It’s a fun way for families to explore the Gallery and learn more about the portraits.
Learn about Australian history
Visit the National Museum of Australia, located alongside Lake Burley Griffin, where you can browse through permanent galleries and temporary exhibitions. On weekdays from 9-20 July 2018, families can enjoy some creative activities inspired by the exhibitions. During the school holidays at the Australian War Memorial you can join one of the free family activities including the hands-on history program and family tours.
Discover prehistoric creatures at the National Dinosaur Museum
Along with 23 dinosaur skeletons and more than 300 displays of individual fossils, there is a new temporary exhibit on show – a Tyrannosaurus Rex model that is 8 metres high and 20 metres long! While at Canberra’s National Dinosaur Museum, join a tour, take part in a dinosaur hunt activity, see the indoor exhibits and wander through the outdoor dinosaur garden. This attraction is located at Gold Creek, near Cockington Green Gardens, around a 20 minute drive from the hotel.
