You know an establishment means business when the word ‘artisan’ appears in their name. And that couldn’t be more true about Shepherd’s Artisan Bakehouse. Recently, their little stand at Castle Towers has had a revamp and Shepherd’s has re-opened, bigger and better than ever!

Let’s start with one of our favourite things first – croissants. The Shepherd’s croissants are simply insane. An almond croissant is one of our top sweet treats and the one from Shepherd’s is up there with the best we’ve had. The Belgian chocolate version is sensational too and they have a few other variations such as rhubarb, pear and pistachio and of course the humble plain croissant.

Shepherd’s is now serving coffee so it’s a one-stop shop for morning tea or lunch. It’s definitely a challenge choosing just one thing. There’s the aforementioned croissants obviously and the fabulous looking lamingtons. There’s also a large gluten free range of sweets such as caramel slice, honey & almond slice, and chia & raspberry brownies which we’ve heard are sensational. And we spied their gorgeous gluten free Christmas mince pies which look delicious. The dilemma is choosing just one thing!

They take their bread at Shepherd’s very seriously and as a result it’s excellent. As mums, we feel like we’ve been eating standard pre-sliced supermarket-bought bread for too long and had forgotten how good it can be. We sampled two loaves – the teff, spelt and pumpkin seed sourdough and the chia rye sourdough. We decided to simply enjoy it with butter and let the bread speak for itself – wow! It’s so good it doesn’t need anything else.

There’s a large range of pastries and savoury rolls on offer too which are great for a lunch pit stop. We love these because you can eat them one handed – and sometimes that’s required when you’re a mum! A few options include the Thai chicken curry pastry, lamb and harissa savoury roll and of course your classic sausage roll which is darn tasty. They have a current special of a savoury pastry and kale slaw for $8.50. Lunch sorted!

Shepherd’s is a great option because it’s so versatile. It offers a quick lunch when you’re on the go at the Towers, a morning tea catch up for a sweet treat with a friend and is great for fresh beautiful bread for a weekend lunch. One word – yum!
