Wollundry Park playground has always been one of our favourite local playgrounds, with a play structure ideal for toddlers and pre-school aged children near to shops and the local library. But in late 2023 the playground was vandalised, leaving locals devastated. Fast forward to 2024 and the silver lining – a brand spanking new playground has just opened!
The upgraded playground has a nursery rhyme theme with bright, colourful equipment, complemented by a natural colour palate for the taller structures. Note, when writing this article we have guessed how the nursery rhyme theme ties in, but like the Olympics Opening Ceremony we may need the Council to interpret this for us!
The feature play tower and monkey bars has increased the play options for older kids in the playground. The slide is massive and surrounded by equipment for kids to climb and swing from. We believe the two bars are leading up to the play tower are known as a ‘bannister slide’. We’ve never seen one before.
So what nursery rhyme does the tower relate to? We can see that the feature play tower is a clock tower, so maybe ‘Hickory Dickory Dock’ and the kids are the mice! We can also see that the climbing net has Incy Wincy Spider on it.
In addition to the big play tower there’s a smaller toddler play unit with a double slide. This has been designed for independent toddler play and isn’t as scary as the tower! The play unit is flanked by a mini merry-go-round and a fabulous bank of swings which includes a net swing and a parent/child swing.
To add to the fun in the playground there’s imaginary play equipment. We’re guessing the bus links to the nursery rhyme, ‘The Wheels on the Bus’ and there’s also a ‘Row, Row, Row your Boat’.
We have no idea how the solar panelled shop with an electric car point play links into a nursery rhyme but kids seem to love it! There’s also a kookaburra rocker. Again, we have no idea how this fits into the theme but anyone who hangs out at the sporting fields at Pennant Hills Park will tell you, where there’s food a kookaburra will be there to grab it, so we’re not surprised a rogue one snuck into this playground!
Wollundry park is fully fenced. The park is directly across the road from Pennant Hills train station, which is perfect if your little one likes trains!
There are lots of trees surrounding this park which keep it shady. And it’s a short walk from Pennant Hills shops for those who love a coffee!
Whilst there are no toilets at the playground, you can duck next door to the library.
